On Wednesday, July 19, the creator of the Mediterranean Son will be the main protagonist at Jazz San Javier, where he will present two different projects. In the first part of the night, Ximo Tebar leads The New Champs, along with Byron Landham and Pat Biachi, in a concert in memory of the brilliant organist Joey DeFrancesco. At the end of the first concert, the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, and the Councilor for Culture and director of the Festival, David Martínez, will present him with the Prize, a sculpture made by the artist Manuel Páez, which represents a group of jazz musicians in full action. Ximo Tebar will return to the stage in the second concert of the night together with the Brazilian guitarist and singer Gladston Galliza and his Brazilian Jazz Project.
Beyond his connection with the Festival and the warmth with which he has always been received by the San Javier Jazz public, the Award recognizes the career of this musician considered by specialized critics as the creator of the Mediterranean Son, which can be appreciated in albums like “Aranzazu” and many others. Along with other more traditional jazz records, they make up an extensive discography. Dedicated to music since he was 17 years old, he has not stopped touring around the world leading his own group or together with prestigious soloists. Among the many recognitions and prizes received, Ximo Tebar has been, for two consecutive years, the Best Soloist of the National Jazz Show, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.

The Festival, which has already brought forward names such as Djavan, Samara Joy and Steve Turre, will present its 25th anniversary Award to guitarist Ximo Tebar, who performed in the first concert in the Festival's history.
The new winter theater of San Javier has been the space chosen to present the 25th edition of the San Javier International Jazz Festival to be held from June 30th to July 23rd, with a total of 22 concerts in 15 nights , three of them in open spaces in San Javier, La Manga del Mar Menor and Santiago de la Ribera. The Festival, which looks back on its first quarter of a century of life, will present the Prize for this edition to Ximo Tebar, who was on the first night of the Festival 25 years ago, and remembers three great musicians who also performed on the stage of the Almansa Park auditorium, Joey DeFrancesco, pianist Ramsey Lewis and saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
The poster, the work of Casaú Estudio, anticipates this edition's nod to wind instruments in jazz, with the prominent presence of saxophonist Scott Hamilton, trombonist Steve Turre and trumpeter Paolo Fresu. The 25th edition of the Festival, in which names such as Dianne Reeves, Djavan, Niels Lan Doky, The Waterboys or the premiere in Spain of "the best soul band in the world", The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra, take a broad look at the female vocal jazz with presences as relevant as Dianne Reeves herself, Samara Joy, Michele Hendricks, Natacha Atlas, Pepa Niebla, Petra Magoni (from the band Musica Nuda), Anna Colom, Roxane Arnal, Gisele Jackson and Terrie Odabi.
The director of the Festival David Martínez pointed out that the 25th edition, "commits to the present and the future, although it takes the opportunity to look back and remember the musicians who have already passed through here and have made it great." Martínez also had words of recognition to the one who was its creator and director, Alberto Nieto, present at the event, whom he thanked, for continuing to collaborate with the Festival. The concerts scheduled at Parque Almansa will begin on June 30th with Djavan, one of the most admired Brazilian musicians inside and outside his country. Djavan will open Jazz San Javier where he arrives with his latest album “D”, number 25 of a brilliant career that he began in 1976, with hits like “Flor de Lys”. Accompanied by a seven-piece band, guitarist, singer and composer Djavan promises a brilliant opening to the Festival with a Brazilian flavor.
The next appointment will come onJuly 1st with a double concert night that will begin with the Cuban pianist and vocalist, Alfredo Rodríguez, together with the drummer Michael Olivera and the bassist Yarel Hernández, with whom they make up his famous Trio, admired throughout the world. With a brilliant career in the world of jazz promoted by the legendary Quincy Jones, since he discovered him in 2007, Alfredo Rodríguez stands out for his ability to integrate all genres of traditional and modern music. The second concert of the night will be starred by the British group Mamas Gun, with the brilliant singer Andy Platts, who last year performed at Jazz San Javier with his other group Young Gun Silver Fox. soul-pop band, with a seventies sound and reminiscences of greats of the genre such as Bill Whiters or Marvin Gaye.
The new winter auditorium, which has been built a few meters from the summer auditorium, opens as the stage for Jazz San Javier with the concert on July 5th starring saxophonist Scott Hamilton, master of the tenor saxophone with more than 40 albums recorded with the prestigious Concord Records label. He will perform with a quartet in which the pianist Ignasi Terraza stands out and the great revelation of Spanish vocal jazz, the Andalusian singer based in Brussels, Pepa Niebla, as a special guest.
On July 7th the double session will return with a programme that will begin with Musica Nuda + Chano Domínguez, an original project that represents the premiere in Jazz San Javier of one of the most prestigious jazz groups in Italy, Musica Nuda, made up of vocalist Petra Magoni and double bassist Ferruccio Spinetti. The duo, specialists in the adaptation to jazz of rock, pop and classical songs, collaborates on this occasion with the Spanish pianist, Chano Domínguez, an exponent of the fusion of jazz and flamenco, in a concert with the collaboration of the Istituto Italian of Culture. The night will end with the best blues, a genre very well cared for by Jazz San Javier, where the great Joe Louis Walker returns after eight years, “a legendary icon of modern blues”, as described by the music platform NPR Music. The guitarist and vocalist will be accompanied by three excellent musicians, the Hammond organ, bass and drums, with whom he will review part of a career with musical milestones such as his albums "Hornet's Nest" (2014) and his latest work "Weight of the World”.
The great lady of jazz Dianne Reeves will perform at Jazz San Javier on July 8th, in a night that will be opened by the harmonica player Antonio Serrano. Serrano played in the first edition of Jazz San Javier 25 years ago and since then there have been many occasions in which he has returned with multiple projects together with José Reinoso or Ignasi Terraza, among others. On this occasion, Antonio Serrano, considered one of the greatest harmonica virtuosos in Europe, will do it with his Quartet, made up of harmonica, piano, bass and drums. The charisma and great voice of Dianne Reeves will once again fill the Parque Almansa auditorium, where in 2015 she collected the Festival prize. Dianne Reeves is considered one of the most important vocalists in jazz today, in the wake of other greats such as Sara Vaughan or Betty Carter. In addition to five Grammy Awards, she also has the title of "Jazz Master", the highest distinction to which a jazz musician in the United States can aspire, awarded by the National Endowment for The Arts.
On July 12nd, Jazz San Javier welcomes a true legend of European jazz, the Italian Paolo Fresu, a virtuoso on trumpet and flugelhorn, whose career has led to a balance of more than 350 recorded albums, 80 of them as a leader. Holder of all the European jazz awards as the best musician on the continent, the Sardinian musician maintains a busy schedule of concerts around the world, such as the one that brings him to Jazz San Javier with his brilliant quintet with whom he had not met for years.
Matthieu Saglio Quartet & Guests will mean the return to Jazz San Javier, on July 14, of the French cellist based in Valencia, Matthieu Saglio, whose unforgettable concert in 2021 was immortalized on his CD “Live in San Xavier 2021”. The brilliant career of this brilliant musician who had already visited San Javier with his previous group Jerez-Texas, returns to the Festival where he will present his latest album "Voices", with luxury guests such as the Egyptian-British singer Natacha Atlas, the great Catalan singer Anna Colom, and his brother the vocalist Camille Saglio, as well as the guitarist José “El Piru” and the trumpeter Roqui Albero.
On July 15th Jazz San Javier is visited by one of the most innovative musicians in jazz, the legend of the trombone, Steve Turre. His long career in which he has collaborated with stars such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie or Tito Puente, among many others, sounds like jazz and Latin music, a winning fusion to which Steve Turre adds the sound of seashells as instrument, of which he is an absolute master. The night will be rounded off with blues by Texan Buddy Withington and Santiago Campillo from Murcia, passionate about classic blues whose chemistry is shown on the CD “Live in San Javier Jazz Festival 2017”. Now they return to the Festival accompanied by Oneida James (ex-Joe Cocker bassist), José Ciudad on drums and the original M-Clan keyboardist, Iñigo Uribe, on piano and Hammond organ.
The New Champs “In memoriam Joey DeFrancesco”, is a tribute to the brilliant organist, trumpet and saxophonist, by the group “The New Champs”, promoted by the Spanish musician Ximo Tebar who He was part of the original group "The Champs", along with Joey DeFrancesco himself and Idris Muhammad. On July 21st, the 23-year-old American singer Samara Joy, who has won many awards and is admired by critics despite her young career, arrives at Jazz San Javier who has already earned two Grammy Awards and comparisons with stars like Sara Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. The other concert of the evening will have a Danish accent with Niels Lan Doky Trio. Top-level European jazz with the brilliant pianist who has been placed in the wake of Bill Evans. On July 22nd comes an original and fresh concert by the French singer, guitarist and actress, Roxane Arnal and Baptiste Bailly, jazz pianist, who will offer his folk blues with a touch of jazz, whose style has been compared to Eva Cassidy or Norah Jones. The night will end with one of the most anticipated visits, the return of The Waterboys, a mythical group, a world reference in folk and rock. The Festival will close on July 23rd with what is considered one of the best Soul Blues bands in the world. The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra Featuring: Terrie Odabi & Theo Huff, who will offer his first concert in Spain in San Javier, has been the band chosen by Van Morrison to accompany him on his next American tour, which begins in September. The Anthony Paul Orchestra, which has received five nominations at the 2022 Blues Music Awards, will perform led by guitar great Anthony Paule, with nine musicians on stage including Terrie Odabi and Theo Huff, two of America's greatest soul singers.
As usual, Jazz San Javier will take three free concerts to open spaces in San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga del Mar Menor.
In the first days of the Festival, on July 2nd, the Plaza de España in San Javier will host a concert by one of the best swing groups in Spain, the Murcian band Zoot Suiters that will fill the square with rhythm with great swing classics and their pop versions adapted to this genre.
On July 16th, the Tomás Maestre port, in La Manga del Mar Menor, will be the perfect setting to enjoy a concert by Gisele Jackson, a great voice of soul blues who has worked with Ray Charles, Donna Summer or James Brown, who comes to Jazz San Javier with his band, The Shu Shu's.
On July 20th, Jazz San Javier goes next to the Mar Menor on the Barnuevo esplanade, in Santiago de la Ribera, with a great vocal jazz concert, which brings together Michele Hendricks, an expert in scat and vocalese techniques and a teacher at combining classic jazz with new trends, along with trumpeter and singer Ronald Baker.
